Tenacatita: Active |
|
|
Our most
popular tour! From La Manzanilla we drive about 25 minutes
to the idyllic fishing village of Tenacatita. From here,
we embark into Tenacatita Bay and paddle for about an hour
before stopping on a secluded beach where we snorkel over
a fringing coral reef, have a snack, and talk briefly
about coral reef ecosystems before embarking into
Tenacatita Bay once again. After more paddling in the bay
we enter “La Vena,” a mangrove estuary. Here, we discuss
mangrove ecosystems before heading into the full-canopy
mangrove lagoon where birding opportunities abound. We end
in Tenacatita where you will be treated to a traditional
Mexican seafood lunch at La Fiesta Mexicana restaurant.

Rio Purification: Active, Birding |
|
This
river showcases perhaps the greatest diversity of birds
along any riparian area of the Costa Alegre. From La
Manzanilla, we drive about 25 minutes to the put-in. A
scenic and tranquil three-hour paddle takes us to the
take-out on an undeveloped open ocean beach just north of
the town of Tenacatita, where we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch
and time to swim. Some of the birds we may encounter
include passerines such as Yellow-winged Cacique,
Vermilion Flycatcher, and Great Kiskadee, in addition to
raptors: Common Black Hawk, Grey Hawk, and Osprey.
Finally, we will see a number of shore and water birds
including Roseate Spoonbill, Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, and, if we’re lucky, Bare-throated Tiger
Heron. |

Rio Cuixmala: Active, Birding |
If
you like birding and beautiful riparian scenery, this is
the tour for you. From La Manzanilla we drive about 45
minutes to our put-in on the Rio Cuixmala. With nearly 300
different species of birds in the area and the protected
Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere on the right side of the river,
the Rio Cuixmala is a unique sanctuary. After about an
hour of paddling and birding we come to a beach which
separates the now widened river from the open ocean. We
continue into a thicker region of forest before stopping
on the beach for a snack. From here you can view the
Biosphere’s founder’s, James Goldsmith, castle in the
distance. Picnic lunch on the beach, or restaurant lunch
at La Loma. No snorkeling.

|
From La
Manzanilla we drive 40 minutes to the exclusive resort of
Careyes. We embark into Careyes Bay where we paddle along
sea cliffs and around sea stacks which make up the most
ruggedly beautiful section of the Costa Alegre. Then we
dip into a protected cove with scattered islands and
eventually land on a quintessential paradisiacal beach
called Playa Esmeralda where we snorkel over a fringing
coral reef and enjoy a picnic in paradise. Brief overview
of coral reef ecosystems. After lunch we either paddle
back to Careyes.

Isla Cocinas: Active
to Very Active |
|
From La Manzanilla we drive 50 minutes to the tiny fishing
village of Chamela, where several islands within the Bay
of Chamela can be seen. We launch from a protected cove in
Chamela and paddle to Isla Cocinas (Kitchen Island) where,
it is said, pirates used to take refuge for weeks at a
time. Perhaps they were lured by the white sand beach
where we enjoy a picnic lunch and snorkeling. If time
permits and you are game, a circumnavigation of the island
always proves interesting. Birds abound, especially the
Brown Boobies, which make their nests on the island where
they are free from predators. |

which we have access). We stop along the way on a private
