Rio Purification Kayaking
Tour:
Active |
|
|
This
river showcases perhaps the greatest diversity of birds
along any riparian area of the Costa Alegre. From La
Manzanilla, we drive about 25 minutes to the put-in. A
scenic and tranquil three-hour paddle takes us to the
take-out on an undeveloped open ocean beach just north of
the town of Tenacatita, where we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch
and time to swim. Some of the birds we may encounter
include passerines such as Yellow-winged Cacique,
Vermilion Flycatcher, and Great Kiskadee, in addition to
raptors: Common Black Hawk, Grey Hawk, and Osprey.
Finally, we will see a number of shore and water birds
including Roseate Spoonbill, Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, and, if we’re lucky, Bare-throated Tiger
Heron. |

Rio Cuixmala Kayaking
Tour:
Active |
|
|
If you
like birding and beautiful riparian scenery, this is the
tour for you. From La Manzanilla we drive about 45 minutes
to our put-in on the Rio Cuixmala. With nearly 300
different species of birds in the area and the protected
Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere on the right side of the river,
the Rio Cuixmala is a unique sanctuary. After about an
hour of paddling and birding we come to a beach which
separates the now widened river from the open ocean. We
continue into a thicker region of forest before stopping
on the beach for a picnic lunch. From here you can view
the Biosphere’s founder’s, James Goldsmith, castle in the
distance. Birds include Purple Gallinule, Northern
Jacana, social and boat-billed flycatcher, Green, Belted,
and Ringed Kingfisher. |
